Community Connections

Recently I had to teach a leadership lesson defining community and the importance of community service. The usual description was formulated. Community is about the city or town that you live, we decided. It is our neighbors, teachers and friends. It is everything that is close to us.

However, today I have changed my definition of community. It is so much bigger than the people we can see, or interact with on a daily basis. Community is truly about sharing with one another and being heard. The blogging community is incredibly unique. The last couple of days I have been trying my best to reply to all of the intimate and personal comments made by complete strangers. I was surrounded by love and encouragement from a community that I have never seen, never met. This is the greatest act of community service I have ever received, and it was simply being heard.

My heart goes out to all of you who have lost a loved one. We have our grief in common, but we also have this amazing community – a place to connect and encourage one another. Relationships built on naked souls, words of honest emotion, moments of chaos and times of solitude. We should never underestimate the power of our writing voice, because through your words, I have met a few hundred wonderful new friends. I see you on your pages, living a life fully engaged.

Thank you for seeing me.

  1. I have learned that the blogging world is full of nice people. (including you!) its refreshing to know that there are still decent people in the world.
